BRONX, NEW YORK, May 24- A motorcyclist, who reportedly ran a stop sign, was run over and killed by a Department of Corrections bus that was transporting prisoners to Rikers Island.
Investigators believe that Raylin Heredia-Delacruz, 23, was speeding past a stop sign, when he was struck and run over by the bus, instantly killing the Fordham resident.
The collision took place at 8:02 p.m., on Thursday, May 17, at the intersection of Oak Point Avenue and Longfellow Avenue in the Hunts Point section.
Police sources say Delacruz was traveling south on Longfellow when he collided with the bus. The victim suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The bus, transporting 11 prisoners from a nearby prison barge to Rikers Island, continued for a half a block before it was able to stop.
The motorcycle knocked a set of wheels off its axle and was wedged up under the bus when it finally came to a stop.
The victim's unidentified mother could be heard crying out in agony from a block away, as her sons body lay on the street, covered by a bed sheet.
The driver and a second prison guard were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The inmates were returned to the jail barge and were checked out by a doctor there.
Police say no criminality is suspected and the crash was deemed an accident.
A worker at a nearby bodega said of the young man, "We all knew him, he will certainly be missed."
